One of the most beautiful truths that emerged from our conversation is that birth work often finds you when you’re ready—sometimes when you least expect it.
For some, it begins with an intense fascination with birth stories.
For others, it’s a spiritual teacher that arrives through life experiences, offering lessons in trust, sovereignty, and connection to the feminine.
Take Marie, for example. She didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming a birth worker.
In fact, her early understanding of birth was shaped by fear and the belief that birth was inherently dangerous.
Then one day, she stumbled upon a natural birth story on Instagram. She watched in awe as a woman retreated to a dark room to labor alone—so different from what she thought birth should look like.
That story shifted something deep within her. She started listening to natural birth stories day and night, finding comfort, healing, and a newfound trust in her body.
Birth became a spiritual teacher, guiding her toward her true calling.
Unlike many traditional career paths, birth work often unfolds in unexpected ways.
Sophia, a midwife from the UK, described how her fascination with women’s health, physiology, and the natural world slowly revealed that midwifery was the perfect place for all her passions to converge.
She hadn’t planned on becoming a midwife, but looking back, she could see the threads that had always been present. Each step in her journey had been preparing her for this work.
Birth work is rarely a straight path. It’s a series of awakenings, realizations, and small steps that eventually lead you to the birth altar.
Another common thread among these women is the feeling of being drawn toward birth work, even before they fully understood why.
Sometimes it begins as a whisper—a quiet curiosity or fascination that won’t go away.
For Sophie, a pediatrician, that whisper started in medical school.
She was fascinated by the beauty and mystery of pregnancy and fetal development.
But once she stepped into the hospital’s labor ward, her experience clashed with what she had learned about physiological birth. She felt deeply uncomfortable with the over-medicalization of birth and eventually turned away from obstetrics altogether.
Still, the calling didn’t leave her.
It showed up again in unexpected ways—like when she found herself supporting a postpartum mother who needed more than medical advice; she needed someone to listen, hold space, and help her reconnect with her intuition.
It was in that moment that Sophie knew: This is what I’m meant to do.
If birth work is calling you, it’s important to listen to your body.
One of the most powerful pieces of advice that came out of this conversation was to wait for a full-body yes before stepping into this path.
Marie, who was hesitant at first, spent a full month sitting with the decision before joining the Sacred Birth Worker Mentorship.
She listened closely to her body, waiting for the answer to arise from within. When the answer came, it was clear and undeniable.
I always encourage women to trust their intuition.
Birth work is sacred and transformative, and it requires deep presence and commitment.
It’s not something to rush into, but when it’s right, you’ll know.
Is birth work a soul calling?
For the women in this conversation, the answer is a resounding yes.
Birth has a way of awakening something ancient and powerful within us.
For many, it feels like remembering—like we’ve done this before, just not in this lifetime.
It’s a call to return to the sacred, to reclaim birth as a rite of passage, and to serve at the birth altar in a way that honors women’s sovereignty and power.
Sophia said it beautifully: “For me, birth work is not just something I do; it’s a lens through which I see the entire world. Everything in life—friendship, family, love, even cooking—can be understood through the lessons of birth.”
As we wrapped up our conversation, I asked each woman what advice they would give to someone considering birth work. Their answers were heartfelt and profound.
Jess, a doula from Atlanta, said:
"Where did the whisper come from? Sit with that. Feel into it. If it stirs something deep within you, listen."
Sophie, the pediatrician from the UK, offered this reminder:
"There is a feminine awakening happening right now. Women are craving connection, sovereignty, and true support. If you feel the call, trust that your community needs you."
And Marie, the sacred birth worker from Germany,, who was once unsure if she’d ever feel ready, had this to say:
"Trust your body. Tune into the vibration of the words and the vision. If it feels right, it is."
If this conversation resonates with you, if you’ve felt the nudge, the whisper, or the pull toward birth work, I invite you to sit with it.
